Jumpstart 2022 with these Tips to Sticking to a New Year’s Resolution

For some, a New Year’s resolution is a tradition set every January 1st.  The promise to continue good practices, change a behavior, accomplish a goal, or everyone’s favorite ‘lose weight’ are a few that are on top of the list.  Did you know that more than half of all resolutions made fail? Here are a few tips to achieve your goal!

  • Pick the Right Resolution. A reason a resolution is not right for you could be that it was created based on someone else or society’s idea of change.  Make sure that it is relevant to your specific needs and that it is something achievable.
  • Create a Plan. It is easy to think about the end goal, but you need a way to get there.  It takes 21 days to form or break a habit.  Experts suggest breaking the habit into three parts; A cue or a cause to the bad habit, a routine or what do you do with the cue and a reward for how it makes you feel at the end.  The idea behind that is to find a better solution to reward your cue.
  • Tell Someone. When you tell people about your plans, they’ll encourage you to stick to them! It’s harder to give up when people are cheering you on.
  • Make it Personal. If your goal is to exercise start small.  If you are going from a sedimentary lifestyle, odds are that jumping into a five-mile run will only hurt the process.  Start with a walk and work your way up.  The small victories will reinforce your routine and make you actually want to stick with it.

Make sure that your goal is realistic and encouraging.  Don’t give up if life throws you a hurdle.  Focus on what you are doing and your end goal.  No one is perfect and your quest for your resolution won’t be either.
