Earwax production is usually a normal and healthy function providing protection and lubrication for our ears. It helps reduce the risk of ear infections due to its antibacterial components. Earwax buildup may be uncomfortable and in extreme cases cause temporary hearing loss. There are several over-the-counter earwax removal products available, but there are also a few home remedies to clear out those ear canals, below!
Baking Soda
To remove earwax with baking soda, dissolve ½ teaspoon of baking soda in 2 ounces of warm water. Tilt your head to the side and drop 5 to 10 drops of the solution into each ear. Leave the solution in each ear for up to one hour and rinse with warm water. Do this daily until excess wax is gone. Do this no longer than two consecutive weeks at a time.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Using 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, tilt your head and drop 5 to 10 drops into one ear. Let it sit for five minutes and then drain out. Repeat on the other ear. Do this once daily for 3 to 14 days.
Oils
The use of oils like baby oil, mineral oil, olive oils, and even stool softeners help soften earwax.
Irrigation
Ear irrigation, or flushing your ears, is something urgent care centers like Medac regularly utilizes to help care for patients with certain ear conditions, but it is possible in some cases to dislodge earwax at home with a gentle irrigation technique. Use a syringe and warm water to gently flush out each ear by tilting your head to each side. Allow the water to run down into a bowl. This can be used in combination with the other methods as well. With the more stubborn earwax it is helpful to soften it up before flushing.
Use of cotton swabs, ear candles, or small objects like bobby pins in the ear canal is not recommended. These methods may cause more harm by pushing ear wax deeper into the ear. These can lead to problems with your hearing, or ear canals that are itchy, painful, or more prone to infection. Ears are delicate, and it’s important to avoid rupturing the ear drum. If these home remedies still don’t help, it may be time to check in with your doctor.
