What Are Complications of the Flu?

For some people the flu comes and goes, and while annoying, doesn’t interrupt life too much. But for many of us, the flu comes with complications. With so much information out there about why we should get a flu shot, sometimes it’s hard to remember exactly what the complications of the flu are. The list below will give you an idea but is not exhaustive- meaning there are many more complications of the flu that can do a lot of harm to us and the people we love.

  • Post viral cough (check out our article about this from last month here)
  • Sinus infections
  • Ear infections
  • Myocarditis – inflammation of the heart
  • Encephalitis – inflammation of the brain
  • Myositis, rhabdomyolysis – inflammation of muscle tissue
  • Sepsis
  • Multi-organ failure

This list of illnesses and ailments can be attributed to influenza as well as co-infections of bacteria. As you continue to muddle through this flu season, remember to remain diligent in combating the chances of spreading or contracting this dangerous virus.
