Questions and the CDC’s Answers about Coronavirus

With news of the 2019-nCov (also known as Wuhan-Coronavirus) circulating the television, radio, and internet sources, it can be overwhelming finding the answers about this outbreak of illness. We at Medac want to make it easy for our communities to get accurate information, so here are the top five questions and the CDC’s answers about Wuhan-Coronavirus!

  1. What are the symptoms of 2019-nCov? Coronavirus symptoms include cough, fever, and shortness of breath.
  2. What are the differences in the 2019-nCov and influenza? Coronaviruses include the above symptoms. The flu also usually presents with a fever and cough, however shortness of breath is a complication of the flu but not an immediate symptom, as it can be with the illnesses in the Coronavirus family. The flu also generally comes with body aches, a stuffy nose, and headache. These symptoms are not immediately associated with Coronavirus.
  3. How contagious is 2019-nCov? Contagiousness varies. Some viruses are highly contagious, and others are not. 2019-nCoV transmission investigations are ongoing.
  4. How likely am I or my family to catch it? There have been no confirmed cases of 2019-nCov in the southeastern United States. Risks to the general American public for 2019-nCoV is currently considered low.
  5. What can I do to protect myself and my family? Practice the same precautions you should already be following during flu season. Having your flu shot, frequently washing your hands, and seeking treatment for illness are the first steps in defense!
